Welcome to Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital

Jain Institute of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine (JIPSM)

Jain Institute of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine (JIPSM) launched in march of 1999 is a highly proficient unit dealing exclusively with pulmonary diseases and their treatment and has become a referral centre for respiratory diseases. Our Pulmonologists have earned global acclaim for their knowledge and expertise in the management of diseases & conditions pertaining to the Lungs and Chest diseases.

Some of the routinely encountered Respiratory and Sleep Disorders are :

  • Asthma and Allergic Disorders.
  • Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease(CPOD).
  • Pulmonary Infections such as Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Respiratory Infections.
  • Acute and Chronic Respiratory Failure.
  • Sleep Related Breathing Disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Aphea(APNEA).
  • Interstitial Lung Diseases and Sarcoidosis.
  • Other Chronic Respiratory Diseases.

Services Offered

  • It is a diagnostic procedure performed under local anesthesia using Fiber-Optic Video Bronchoscope to observe the anatomy of air passages(Windpipe) in cases of pulmonary conditions such as Lung Cancer, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis and patient having Haemoptysis (spitting out blood) and obtain biopsy specimen if abnormality is detected.
  • At the time of performing Bronchoscopy, certain diagnostic procedures can be performed :
BAL : Broncho-alveolar Lavage- Collect liquid sample from lungs for analysis.
    TBLB : Trans-bronchial Lung Biopsy.
TBNA: Trans-bronchial Lymph node Needle Aspiration.
EBUS : Endobronchial Ultrasound Bronchoscopy :
It is a advanced test used to evaluate lymph nodes/mass inside the chest and help the pulmonologist to accurately take biopsy specimen for diagnosis.

  • Medical Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure which allows access to the pleural space. This makes room for medical interventions that do not involve making large incisions.
  • This technique is primarily employed for the following :
    • Assessing Lung Cancer / Diagnosing Pleural TB
    • Procuring Biopsy for study.
    • Administration of medication, or other treatment given directly to the lungs.
    • To drain accumulated fluid, pus or blood in the pleural cavity surrounding the lung.

  • RICU is equipped with state of the art Ventilators and Monitoring System to provide Advanced Life Support to critically ill patients. It is manned by highly trained team of doctors, Intensivists, Nurses and Para Medical Staff.

  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program :
It is a holistic medical therapy that combines exercise, training and patient education on pulmonary disorders and their management. The programme has significantly improved the quality of life of numerous patients in improving their breathlessness and muscle strength.

  • Purpose of the Program :
The program primarily aims to decrease disease symptoms, minimize hospitalization time and increase patient mobility, in an attempt to improve patients’ quality of life.

  • Program Details :
The Program stretches over a period of 6-8 weeks and typically consists of, 2 -3 visits, lasting for 30-60 minutes every week. Each session is customized and involves whole body exercise/breathing techniques/education/nutrition counseling under the expert supervision of our staff.

  • Post Program Execution :
In order to sustain the benefits attained during the programme the patient should continue to exercise regularly at home. Home exercise is initiated during the second or third week of rehabilitation.

  • Launched in 1999, the Sleep Lab at JIPSM is one of the first sleep labs in South India and has proven to be successful in the treatment of over 8000 patients.
  • Sleep lab is chiefly used to diagnose ‘Sleep Apnea Syndrome’, which is a condition wherein the patient experiences repeated episodes of choking during sleep resulting in low oxygen/disrupted sleep/daytime sleepiness and fatigue.
  • Sleep studies are vital as untreated sleep apnea leads to an increased risk for heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke and other medical conditions.

  • JIPSM is supported by advanced Radiology & Imaging Services at the Hospital having “state-of-the-art” CT Scanner & MRI.

  • Basic Test : Also known as Spirometry/Pulmonary Function Test/Lung Function Test. It is an important Diagnostic tool to Diagnose and monitor progression and treatment responses to various respiratory disorders such as Asthma, COPD, etc.
  • Advanced Pulmonary Function Tests :
    Lung Volume :
Residual Volume and Total Lung Capacity : Useful test to assess impairment in Interstitial Lung Disease/COPD, Pre Operative Assessment of patients undergoing lung surgery etc
  • Diffusion Studies-Dlco : To assess oxygen absorption from the lungs in Interstitial lung disease and to evaluate effects of medicine causing lung toxicity etc...
  • Respiratory Muscle Strength and Respiratory Drive :
This test is employed to observe respiratory muscle weakness and initiate a training regimen to improve muscle strength.
  • Department of Pulmonary Medicine was started in March 1999 at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital as a small unit which has grown into a department over the years with full time Consultants and dedicated Technical Staff.
